第一节课讲校园的种类 kinds of campuses(college、university、community college、trade school)与 where do you live 住校还是走读。

campus 就是校园,it is an area of the school,指学校所在的那片区域。

所以college 通常指比university 更小或更容易的学校:university is big and hard, college is small and easy。

3. trade school

boarding school 就是你住在里面的学校,a school that you live at。

boarding school is before college。

I’m in university.

I’m in college. / I’m in uni.

I’m a college student.

I’m a university student. / I’m a uni student.

I’m in a boarding school.

I’m a boarding school student.

I went to college at UT Austin.

I started at a community college, then transferred to a university.

transfer 的意思就是从一个地方移到另一个地方,to move from one place to another place。

你可以transfer to a different university,转到另一所大学。

大学里的住宿有两种主要类型the two main kinds:on campus 校园内,off campus校园外。

I live in a dorm. / I live in the dorms.

小结:housing 是话题名称,两种住宿是on campus 和off campus。

He lives on campus.

I am alive, I live;但通常用live 表示居住,where do you live 你住在哪里。

We all live together off campus.

Which dorm do you live in?

Hi, how are you?

Nice to meet you.

Which dorm do you live in?

Do you like your roommate?

又一个非常常见的问题:他们是好室友还是坏室友,are they a good roommate or a bad roommate?

I need to get back to the dorm before curfew.

We have a curfew 我们的宿舍有宵禁;curfew is soon 宵禁时间快到了。

I need to back to the dorm,no no no。

要说get back 或者go back:I need to get back to the dorm before curfew. / I need to go back to the dorm before curfew. 对话一

A:

Are you a student?

(生活中刚认识一个人,看来比较年轻)B: Yes, I’m at the local community college.

这里的at 很有意思:英文中说at university、at the college 等等,是说我在那个地方上学。A:

Do you live on campus?

B: No, I live at home.

对话二A:

Do you live in the dorms?

I live in that dorm。

B: Yeah, I like living on campus.

A: Which dorm are you in?

B: Actually, I think we’re in the same dorm.

有的宿舍很大,你可能不认识楼里的每个人,所以说actually I think we’re in the same dorm。对话三A:

Do you live on campus?

B: No, I live in an apartment close to campus.

Do you have roommates?

B: I have three.

They’re pretty loud.

A: I have to get back.

It’s almost curfew.

I have to get back,不是I have to back。

get back to 哪里其实也没必要提,就说I have to get back。

B: Oh, I didn’t know you lived on campus.

A: Yeah, it’s really convenient.

B: I bet it’s cheaper too.

I bet

今天用了很多英语,are you tired?

会越学越容易:it will get easier and easier.

I believe in you.

今天讲了kinds of campuses 和where do you live。

Where did you live?

Did you live on campus?

Did you live in the dorms?

Did you have a roommate?

boarding school boarding, boarding school。

I’m in university.

I’m a college student.

I’m a 会连读。

I’m a college student;那在university 可以说吗?

I went to college at UT Austin. went to 有两个t:prepare the first t, release the second t,准备好第一个t,放开第二个t。

I started at a community college, then transferred to a university.

Where do you live?

He lives on campus.

We all live together off campus.

Which dorm do you live in?

Do you like your roommate?

I need to get back to the dorm before curfew.

这句有三个发音要点:need to:prepare the d, release the t。

get back:prepare the t, release the b。

back to:prepare the k, release the t。

on campus / off campus不用再跟读,campus 已经读过,前面加上on 或off 就行。

对话一(老师演A,学生演B,然后互换)A: Hey, nice to meet you.

Are you a student?

B: Yes, I’m at the local community college.A:

Do you live on campus?

B: No, I live at home.

对话二A:

Do you live in the dorms?

B: Yeah, I like living on campus.

A: Which dorm are you in?

B: Actually, I think we’re in the same dorm.

对话三A: Hey, so do you live on campus?

B: No, I live in an apartment close to campus.A:

Do you have roommates?

B: I have three.

They’re pretty loud.

对话四A: I have to get back.

It’s almost curfew.

B: Oh, I didn’t know you lived on campus.

A: Yeah, it’s really convenient.

B: I bet it’s cheaper too.

I didn’t know you lived on campus,用过去时lived?

I didn’t know you were Chinese.

I didn’t know you were a student.

I didn’t know you ate my sandwich. 第三节课学业规划Study and Career Plan今天讲your study and career plan,中文标题是“学业规划”。

今天讲的是美国人会怎么谈:你想学什么what you want to study,以及你想在事业上做什么what you want to do in your career。

两部分:第一,majors and minors 主修和辅修;第二,kinds of degrees 学位类型。

要注意:谈主修时major 是名词;但平时most of the time,major 是形容词,意思是“主要的”。

minor 和concentration 的区别:your concentration is part of your major,方向是主修的一部分;而minor 是另一个领域。

主修和辅修不能是同一个东西,you cannot major and minor in the same thing,必须是不同的领域;但concentration 属于你的major。

What’s your major?

My major is …

My major is business.

My major is art.

My major is math.

I’m an English major.

(I graduated a long time ago),现在还是可以说I am a music major,我是音乐主修的人。

I’m majoring in engineering.

major 作动词时后面接in:I’m majoring in music.

I want to major in music.

I majored in music.

I have a minor in math.

这个语法有点不一样,是have a minor in。

你也可以说have a major in math,但这不是最常见的说法。

因为每个人都有一个major,everyone in university has a major,但不是每个人都有minor,有的人没有辅修。

I have a minor in math。

I majored in music and I minored in math.

I’m majoring in art with a minor in education.

I’m majoring in art and minoring in education.

谈concentration:I’m studying music with a concentration in performance.

I’m studying, that is my major。

I’m studying music and I have a concentration in performance.

I have a concentration?

I’m getting my bachelor’s.

可以加at:I’m getting my bachelor’s at 某大学;或加in:I’m getting my bachelor’s in某个学科,比如数学。

She’s in grad school.

可以,但平时就说she’s in grad school。

推论:if she’s in grad school, what is she?

She is a grad student.

Do you want to go to grad school?

Maybe, I don’t know.

He will get a master’s degree.

He will get a master’s.

They’re working on their doctorate.

因为我们不知道这个人是男的、女的,还是都不是,所以用they’re working on their doctorate。

I’m working on my bachelor’s 吗?

I’m working on my master’s

A: What’s your major?

B: Engineering.You?

A: I’m studying education.

I’m studying education 跟my major is education 一个意思,education 就是他的主修。

B: Wow, I have a minor in education.

A: I’m majoring in English.

B: Wow, do you want to be a teacher?

A: No, I want to be a journalist.

B: I think you would be a great journalist.

为什么用would be?

I think you would be a great journalist。

对话三A: I’m getting a business degree.

B: Wow, do you want to go to grad school?

go to university 是上大学,go to grad school 是考研。

A: Maybe, but I want to get some real world experience first.

这是我们的一种说法,在学校不算real world,毕业之后out of school 才是real world。B:

That sounds like a good plan.

A: What degree do you have?

B: I got my master’s in the USA.

A: Cool, what is it in?

what is it in = what is your degree in,你学的什么。B:

It’s in science, but I work in the arts.

第四节课学业规划发音课先majors and minors,再different kinds of degrees。

con-cen-tra- tion。

associate degree master’s degree

What’s your major?

记住:说得快的时候your 会弱化成ya 那样的音,what’s your连起来很快。

My major is business. major is 听起来是连在一起的,major is business 有连读感。

I’m an English major.

I’m an English

I’m majoring in engineering. engineering 的第一个音节是en;注意engineer 的发音跟major 很接近,almost the same。

I have a minor in math.

I’m majoring in art with a minor in education.

I’m majoring 有两个m,容易连读,I’m majoring。

I’m studying music with a concentration in performance.

注意with a concentration 的连读,以及in performance。

I’m getting my bachelor’s.

She’s in grad school. she’s in 连读。

He will get a master’s degree. get a 的t:不应该release,prepare the t, don’t release the t。

They’re working on their doctorate. 对话一A: Hey, it’s good to meet you.

My name is Josh.

What’s your major?

B: Engineering.You?

A: I’m studying education.

B: Wow, I have a minor in education.(老师演A 学生演B,然后互换角色练习。

A: I’m majoring in English.

B: Wow, do you want to be a teacher?

A: No, I want to be a journalist.

B: I think you would be a great journalist.

发音要点:want to be 说得很快、很口语时会变成wanna be:

Do you wanna be a teacher?

I think you would be 说快时you would 会缩短成you’d:I think you’d be a great journalist.

对话三A: I’m getting a business degree.

B: Wow, do you want to go to grad school?

A: Maybe, but I want to get some real world experience first.B:

That sounds like a good plan.

发音要点:but I want to get 容易连读,but I want to get, but I want to get some real world experience first。

A: So what degree do you have?

B: I got my master’s in the USA.

A: Cool, what is it in?B:

It’s in science, but I work in the arts.

发音要点:what is 说快时可能缩短成what’s:what’s it in。

it’s 说得快时几乎只剩一个小小的s 的声音,it’s all right、it’s three point eight。

academic 的意思是跟学习、跟拿好成绩有关的,about studying or about getting good grades。

grade school 就是大学之前的一切,first grade through twelfth grade,一年级到十二年级

1. get good grades 考高分grade school 里最基本的学业成绩就是get good grades。

这里黑色的grade(grade school 的grade)跟蓝色的grade(good grades 的grade)是两个不同的意思:grade school 是一年级二年级三年级,get good grades 是考分考得高。

get 是动词;也可以说make good grades,都行。

2. make the honor roll

make the honor roll

3. valedictorian

5. class

即使不是第一第二名,老师也是at the top of my class。

I am the class of 2004.

6. at the top of your class

稍微扩大一点、多几个人,就说near the top of your class,near 是接近,这个词以前讲过,在这里很重要。

She gets good grades. / She makes good grades.

He has good grades. gets 是拿、考、获取;has 就是有,他已经拥有了他的好成绩。

I am on the honor roll.

I made the honor roll.

make the honor roll

made 是make 的过去时态。

She will be the valedictorian.

注意冠词问题:老师刚才说I was not valedictorian,没有用the。

She will be valedictorian.

She will be the valedictorian.

He’s near the top of his class.

his class 和the class 有区别吗?

3. graduate with honors / with distinction 荣誉毕业大学毕业时有不同的成就可以获得,一种是graduate with honors 或graduate with distinction。

cum laude意思跟with honors 差不多,cum laude means with honors。

magna cum laude magna 的意思是more 或very,所以比with honors 高一点。

summa cum laude最高等级,the highest。

从低到高排序:just graduated 普通毕业,然后graduated with honors,然后magna cum laude,最高是summa cum laude。

My GPA is too low.

I have a 3.8 GPA.

My GPA is three point eight.

I got a scholarship.

She graduated with honors.

She graduated summa cum laude. 对话一A: How are your grades?

B: My grades are pretty good.

pretty 就是very 的意思,但是弱化版的very,pretty good 就是“还行”。A:

Did you make the honor roll?

B: Yes, actually I will be the valedictorian.

这个人是在谦虚being modest:先说my grades are pretty good,不想吹牛;对方追问did you make the honor roll,才说好吧,其实我应该是valedictorian。

对话二A: I need to get my grades up.

这个有点俚语的感觉,a little bit like slang:get my grades up 就是get better grades,让成绩上升、GPA 更高。

B: I thought you were near the top of the class.

又是过去时态的句子:I thought 我以前以为,you were near。

A: I used to be, but I’ve been slacking off.

slack off 是摸鱼,to slack off is to 摸鱼。

I’ve been slacking off 是这段时间一直在摸鱼。

B: Well, I hope you can turn it around.

turn it around:it

A: What’s your GPA?

It’s all right.

It’s three point eight.You?

all right 跟pretty good 相同或相似,但更弱一点。

A: “All right”?

That’s so high!

这里的all right 带引号,是因为A 在模仿B 说的话:你说all right?

什么意思all right?

B: But if I go below three point seven, I lose my scholarship.

You?

A: I need to graduate summa cum laude.

B: Why?

Are you applying to grad school?

A: Yep, I want to get into Harvard.

get into 的意思是被录取:哈佛接受了我,I got into Harvard。

B: Amazing.

I’m sure you can get in.

为什么这里写get in 不带to?

I’m sure you can get in to Harvard。

good grades可以跳过,good 和grades 都讲过了。

注意c 和t:prepare the c, release the t,va-le-dic-to-ri-an。

sa-lu-ta-to-ri-an。

at the top of the class以前讲过,不用再讲。

with honors with 的th 可以跟honors 的h 连起来,with honors。

She gets good grades.

He has good grades.

说快时he has 的第二个h 可能被吞掉,he has good grades。

I made the honor roll.

I am on the honor roll 去掉。

She will be the valedictorian. she will 可能缩短成she’ll:she’ll be the valedictorian。

He’s near the top of his class. top of his 里的f 和h 非常接近,有时可以合成差不多的一个音,top of his。

就像he has 会说成he’s 一样,我们很懒。

My GPA is too low.

I have a 3.8 GPA. have 和a 很容易连读,I have a。

I got a scholarship. got a 这里不要读成gotta。

有时候got a 或got to 会变成gotta,但不是每次。

所以就正常读I got a scholarship。

She graduated with honors.

She graduated summa cum laude. 对话一A: Hey, good to see you.

How are your grades?

发音:how are your 说快时your 弱化,how are ya grades。

B: My grades are pretty good.

发音:最准确是my grades are pretty good,但口语聊天时可以稍微吞一点,grades are 连起

来。A:

Did you make the honor roll?

B: Yes, actually I’ll be the valedictorian.(然后A、B 互换角色练习。

A: I need to get my grades up.

发音:grades up 连读,grades up。

B: Really?

I thought you were near the top of the class.

发音:top of the class 连读。

A: I used to be, but I’ve been slacking off.

发音:I used to be 里used to 很容易连读;but I’ve been slacking off。B: I see.

Well, I hope you can turn it around.

发音:turn it around,turning it around 连读。

对话三A: Hey!

What’s your GPA?B:

It’s all right.

It’s three point eight.You?

A: “All right”?

That’s so high!

B: Yeah, but if I go below 3.7, I lose my scholarship.

对话四A: Oh man, my GPA is too low.

I need to graduate summa cum laude.

B: Why are you applying to grad school?

A: Yep, I want to get into Harvard.

发音:get into 连读,get into Harvard。

B: Amazing!

I’m sure you can get in.

I believe in you.
